About Iyengar Yoga
“It is through the alignment of the body that I discovered the alignment of my mind, self, and intelligence.” – B.K.S. Iyengar
Iyengar Yoga is an alignment-based form of Hatha Yoga, created by world-renowned yogi B.K.S. Iyengar (1918–2014). Rooted in the eight-limbed path of ashtanga yoga, Iyengar’s approach refined and modernized yoga practice for students around the world. He authored the bestselling Light on Yoga — often called the “bible of modern yoga” — along with classics such as Light on Pranayama, Light on the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, and Yoga: The Path to Holistic Health.
A pioneer in bringing yoga to the West, B.K.S. Iyengar taught cultural icons, world leaders, and thousands of dedicated practitioners who carried his teachings across the globe. In 2004, Time magazine named him one of the 100 Most Influential People in the world. Today, hundreds of Iyengar Yoga centers around the world continue to share his legacy.
The Method
Iyengar Yoga emphasizes precise alignment, mindful action, and regulated breathing. Classes often use props — including blocks, bolsters, chairs, blankets, and belts — to make poses accessible and therapeutic for students of all body types and physical conditions. This thoughtful approach allows each individual to safely explore the depth of yoga while building strength, stamina, balance, and flexibility.
Standing poses, a hallmark of the method, develop vitality, circulation, coordination, and strong legs, while restorative poses foster relaxation and renewal. Teachers are trained to adapt poses to individual needs, making the practice both inclusive and transformative.
Teacher Training
Certified Iyengar Yoga teachers undergo one of the most rigorous training processes in the yoga world. Teacher education typically spans three to five years and is based on an international syllabus created by B.K.S. Iyengar. It includes in-depth study of anatomy, physiology, philosophy, and pedagogy. This standard of excellence ensures that students are guided with skill, clarity, and care.
An evolving tradition
Iyengar Yoga continues to evolve at the Ramamani Iyengar Memorial Yoga Institute (RIMYI) in Pune, India, where the Iyengar family refines and expands the teachings. New approaches are tested and shared, ensuring the method remains vibrant and relevant.
Often described as “meditation in action,” Iyengar Yoga uses the body as a pathway to self-awareness. Through the release of physical tension and psychological resistance, students cultivate concentration, relaxation, and inner awareness that extend far beyond the yoga mat.
